NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

October 26, 2020

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 10 Americans have diabetes — that’s more than 30 million people. And another 84 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

To raise awareness about diabetes and healthy living, Health First Wellness is proudly participating in National Diabetes Awareness Month. Locally, 12.8% of people who are 18-44 years of age reported being told by a health professional that they have diabetes or are at risk of diabetes.

Depending on your age, weight, and other factors, you may be at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that making healthy changes can greatly lower your risk. To help prevent type 2 diabetes:

  • Watch your weight
  • Eat healthily
  • Get more physical activity

Keep your weight in check. Excess weight is the primary cause of Type 2 diabetes. If you’re overweight, losing just 7 to 10 percent of your current weight can cut your risk in half. Maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent other health problems, too – including heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Be carb-smart. Limit sugar and refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and rice. Focus on high-fiber, whole-grain complex carbohydrates. They’re digested more slowly, which helps keep your blood sugar steady.

Stay active to stay healthy. Inactivity promotes Type 2 diabetes, so regular exercise is essential. You don’t have to spend hours sweating in the gym to get the benefits- just walking briskly for a half hour every day can reduce your risk by up to 30 percent.

During the month of November the ADA sponsors events around the country that serve to make people aware of the risk factors and the warning signs of diabetes. For more information on events taking place, please see the American Diabetes Association’s website at www.diabetes.org To schedule an appointment with our certified nutritionist/dietician, Dana, please call (847) 519-7046.
